EXPLORE UCLA EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

External Affairs leads fundraising and advocacy efforts for UCLA and advances UCLA’s mission of teaching, research and service. We connect UCLA’s faculty, staff, students, alumni, supporters, and friends through strategies, programs, and events designed to build long-term relationships and support for the University. These efforts support advancement and change for our community, the university, and society.

ABOUT UCLA’S EXTERNAL AFFAIRS DIVISION: RAISING CRITICAL FINANCIAL AND PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR UCLA

External Affairs is a national leader in the fields of university fundraising, alumni relations and advocacy. Through the work done in External Affairs, UCLA raised a record-breaking $880,000,000 (as of fiscal year 2017-2018). External Affairs connects UCLA’s alumni, friends, and supporters with students and faculty through programs and events. We raise awareness of UCLA’s incredible success in research, teaching, and healthcare, and of the need to support UCLA to provide for its future.

DEPARTMENTS

External Affairs has over 550 staff in four departments.

Advancement Services

Advancement Services   (AS) is an internal service group that coordinates and performs vital administrative, financial and technology services for the other External Affairs departments. AS facilitates and supports the broad range of its customer's activities through a variety of value-added services including business analysis and process improvement. This department is a key partner in major initiatives across External Affairs and is the custodian of UCLA's million-entity advancement database.

Alumni Affairs

Alumni Affairs manages UCLA's relationships with its more than 394,000 living degree-holders. The UCLA Alumni Association is a separately incorporated, not-for-profit organization with more than 400,000 members. Its mission is: "To enrich the lives of alumni and involve them in UCLA's future." With the help of thousands of volunteers each year, the Association sponsors a variety of programs and services to increase UCLA's reach and influence by recruiting students, awarding scholarships, mentoring current students and fellow alumni, and organizing UCLA-focused events in the community.

Development

Staying at the forefront of discovery requires significant resources. That's where UCLA Development comes in. Development, the largest department in External Affairs, is a best-in-class fundraising program that partners with academic leaders and philanthropists to support UCLA’s highest priorities. We aim to match donors’ interests, passions, and philanthropic goals with UCLA’s priorities and expertise. By engaging a diverse pool of leaders, volunteers, students, faculty, alumni, staff, and friends in the philanthropic process, we encourage a breadth of giving at all levels.

Government and Community Relations

Government and Community Relations coordinates with the UCLA community, the University of California, and national, state, and local governmental entities to generate support for the University and UCLA's interests. G&CR builds relationships with constituent groups, assists community leaders in gaining access to UCLA's resources, and coordinates the University response to a wide range of political and policy issues. It also advises administrators and faculty on strategies to facilitate constructive dialogue with public-sector leaders.
